Cost to renew a Nigerian patent
Nigerian PCT national phase patents fall due for renewal on each anniversary of the PCT filing date. This means that at least one renewal / annuity fee is typically payable on filing a Nigerian patent. In total, 19 renewals are payable for a Nigerian patent. Nigerian patent renewal costs range from $28 per year to $162 per year, depending on the renewal option you select.
Annual renewal
A Nigerian patent may be renewed for one-year only.
If the Nigerian patent is filed through the GlobalIPCo African IP filing system for $415 (filing to grant), the cost to pay historical renewals payable on filing is only $80 per year.
The lowest-cost option to pay Nigerian patent renewals that fall due after filing is $162 per year. This is available through PayAnnuity and is open to all Nigerian patent applicants.

Pre-paying all Nigerian patent renewals to term
It is possible to pay all 19 Nigerian patent renewals upfront for only $530 (i.e. about $28 per year) when filing a Nigerian patent through GlobalIPCo.
This renewal “to term” option (which is referred to as a Vicennial patent renewal) is only available through GlobalIPCo where the Nigerian patent was filed by GlobalIPCo.
Paying renewals for SANi Patents
Where the Nigerian patent forms part of a SANi Combination Patent, S&Z offers “to term” renewal of the SANi patents (i.e. both the South African patent and the Nigerian patent) for only $875 (i.e. $46 per year).
The SANi Combination Patent is the best option and most affordable for securing patent protection in Africa.
