What caused the high growth in South African patents in 2022?
Widespread adoption of online systems is causing exponential growth in African patent filings.
South African patent filings grew by 73% over the past two years (2020-2022) with 35% of South African patents now filed through the GlobalIPCo online system (with S&Z as its South African agent).
In 2022, GlobalIPCo added:
- Nigerian patents;
- SANi Combination Patents, which combine South African and Nigerian patents (cost $875 (filing to courier of certificate) via S&Z); and
- Vicennial Renewal, which processes all 20 years of South African and Nigerian patent at a substantial discount (cost $875 via S&Z).
In 2023, GloblaIPCo will continue discussions with other African Patent Offices to add them to the GlobalIPCo system and extend the scope of the SANi Combination Patent.
2023 will also see GlobalIPCo shift its focus from China to the US and Europe, starting by offering EU designs online.
