Melba Toast Patent

Melba toast is difficult to make. If you put it in a toaster , parts easily burn. If you don’t compact it, the toast is too “airy” 😴 . And, if you compact it in between hot plates, you don’t get an encircling crust 😞 .

In 1942, Harry Tatosian patented the perfect method for making Melba toast with an encircling crust 😀 :

1. Flatten and compact a slice of un-toasted bread
2. Toast one side of the bread by direct contact with a heated surface until brown
3. Toast another side of the bread by direct contact with a heated surface until brown

It is important to toast one side at a time without simultaneously compacting the bread. Only by doing this does one create a perfect encircling crust about the entire periphery.
