Jelly Bean Patent

Did you know that the Jelly Bean was once patented? … back in 1885! 😯

When everyone was breaking their teeth on rock candy 🍭 , August Schwatzschild and Nelson Greenfield set about imitating eggs, creating a confectionery with a smooth exterior shell and a soft interior / yolk 🥚 .

They started with a soft marshmallow “yolk”, encapsulated it within a sugar “shell” and formed the little treat into the shape of an egg.

For some peculiar reason, people preferred beans. A little curve propelled the lacklustre Jelly Egg into Jelly Bean stardom.
