South African patent output continues to decline in 2025
Since 2008 the number of published PCT patent applications filed by South African applicants has steadily decreased by 64%. Why?
⭕ Many South African multinational / technology-focussed companies moved offshore (whether for commercial, tax or exchange control considerations).
⭕ South African multinational companies reduced their R&D budget.
⭕ Universities’ funding was redirected to other initiatives (e.g. building of residences and student grants).
However, during the same period, the number of South African complete applications filed by foreigners has significantly increased. The resultant net increase in South African patents concealed a fundamental problem for the past 18 years.
South Africa is increasingly seen as an attractive patent destination by foreigners, but it is failing to encourage South Africans from patenting.
Time for a policy review.
