SANi and OAPI Trademarks cover 60% of sub-Sahara African GDP
The SANi combination trademark covers South Africa and Nigeria, which account for 44% of sub-Sahara African GDP.
An OAPI regional trademark covers 17 African countries (including Mali, Cameroon and Senegal), which account for 18% of sub-Sahara African population.

Together, the SANi combination trademark and the OAPI regional trademark account for:
⭕ 60% of sub-Sahara African GDP; and
⭕ 41% of sub-Sahara African population.
These are good options for trademark coverage in Africa, and their cost is surprisingly low both through S&Z and through the GlobalIPCo online filing system.
Using the GlobalIPCo system, law firms can easily cover the 19 African countries coloured in blue and yellow for $51-$196 per country.
These countries include:
– South Africa
– Nigeria
– Mali (OAPI)
– Cameroon (OAPI)
– Senegal (OAPI)

GlobalIPCo will add another 12 African countries during 2026.
